Holiday Theatre
by Teresa Tedone

We all know the countdown. Even if you wanted to get away from it you couldn’t. Stores post it, it’s announced on the evening news, and there are websites dedicated to it. Honestly, unless one lives in a cave it is hard not to know how many days until Christmas. For some this news brings a level of stress – shopping, baking, and relatives! But for those of us lucky enough to live in the Phoenix area, it also means that the holiday theatre season has arrived. So whatever your tradition, the Valley has plenty to offer.

SISTER'S CHRISTMAS CATECHISM
Scottsdale’s favorite nun runs her own Christmas investigation in Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold. Sister explains, “We know where the myrrh went and how the frankincense was used, but who’s the culprit who made off with the gold coins and left Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus in that lousy stable without any chance to upgrade to a suite?” Become engrossed in her search while getting a Christmas tradition history lesson with a twist. Class is held at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts and runs from November 30th through December 31st.
The Herberger Theater has several offerings for this holiday season.

The Center Dance Ensemble presents Hans Christian Anderson’s Snow Queen from December 2nd to December 17th.   This fairy tale is told in seven stages and centers on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by a little boy and girl named Gerda and Kay. The performance is directed by local resident Frances Cohen, a well-known teacher, choreographer and multi-award winner who has worked in our valley for many years. The inspirational music is provided by Sergei Prokofiev.

The iTheatre Collaborative presents a Christmas Cabaret in the Performance Outreach Theater from December 8th to the 22nd. Mimicking a New York nightclub setting, the evening’s performance includes a collection of songs that celebrate the season as well as some interesting observations of the holidays.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
And last but certainly not least is the Actors Theatre’s landmark 15th Anniversary production of Dickens
A Christmas Carol. Hailed as the “one and only totally family-friendly show of the season. The one you don’t need to get a babysitter for,” this classic musical full of redemption and hope should become a part of any family’s holiday tradition.

A perfect holiday show that the entire family will enjoy can be found at the Valley Youth Theater. Inspired by A.A. Milne’s classic story, A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail finds Pooh, Piglet, Owl and many other woodland friends frantically searching for Eeyore’s tail. In this fun story filled with delightful songs, caring and sharing are its main themes. It runs Friday, Saturday, and Sundays from December 1, 2006 to December 23, 2006.

Sugarplums, princes, dancing snowflakes and mouse kings have become synonymous with the holiday season. The Nutcracker has been performed all over the world more times than one can count, but Ballet Arizona under the artistic direction of Ib Andersen have created all new scenery, costumes, and choreography to enhance the magic and fun of this classic ballet. Exciting to note is that over 150 local children will be featured and The Phoenix Symphony will be performing Tchaikovsky’s famous musical score. Performances run from December 9 to 27, 2006 at the Symphony Hall.
