West Valley Sports Bars
Before, during of after the game...
by Tyler Hurst

There’s a whole new world taking shape in the west Valley.

With the opening of University of Phoenix Stadium, the continued play of the Coyotes and the unveiling of Westgate, there are more than a few reasons to go west these days. Glendale/Arrowhead/Peoria are no longer places to drive through just to watch a football, hockey or spring training game. The introduction of—and previous existence—of many great destinations are soon to surpass old standbys—think Scottsdale—as the places to eat, drink and be seen. We’ve got a few places that are can’t- miss prospects to make your journey west turn into an all-day trek.

MCDUFFY'S
There’s simply no better place to watch, bet on, celebrate—or, let’s face it, drown your sorrows after—a game than McDuffy’s (15814 N 83rd Ave, Peoria, 623.334.5000). Just down the street from University of Phoenix Stadium and Jobing.com Arena, McDuffy’s is home away from home for many a sport fanatic. Recognized year after year by followers across the Valley, McDuffy’s—soon to be opening a new location in Chandler—didn’t miss a beat after the closing of the popular Tempe location this past June. Check out their website, mcduffys.com, for a full calendar of events, drink specials and to find out more about this month’s Miss McDuffy’s.

GORDON BIERSCH
Whether you’re going to see the Cardinals or on your way back, Gordon Biersch (6915 N 95th Ave, Glendale, 623.877.4300) should be on your short list of places to visit. Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch’s newest location—number 17 nationally—has everything you’d expect from a high-end brewery. They make their beer from scratch, offer up an enticing bevy of fresh food choices, seasonal menus and daily specials. The first restaurant to open at the new Glendale entertainment Mecca, Westgate, Gordon Biersch caters to beer and food-lovers alike. Gift certificates are always available, with special rewards offered to those who purchase. Check out gordonbiersch.com for the latest in seasonal brews, menus and specials for the holiday season

El Toro Bravo Mexican Cantina and Grill (16041 N Arrowhead Fountains Center, Peoria, 623.773.2855) is THE place for the margarita lover. More than a suitable alternative to the hefty beers served at the stadiums, their “Zero Degree of Perfect” tequila program, over 15 kinds of margaritas and a staggering 150 tequilas—40 served at zero degrees—you’d be hard pressed to find this kind of variety in a square block of restaurants, let alone one establishment. Not a big fan of tequila? Fear not, as there is plenty more to be had with daily beer specials.
All food is prepared Sonoran style, with heavy emphasis on fresh ingredients and simple presentation. Come in for the food, watch the highlights on their huge LCD and kick back—Chef Fausto Camacho won’t disappoint.
